Strengths: Able to run my computer for around 10 minutes when in a blackout.
Weakness: My unit has a slight hiss that, at least to me, is very noticeable and annoying when my computer is off.
This APC product is amazing! I purchased this a few days ago and it seems to be working great! My house was hit with a blackout due to some local storms and the backup power allowed me to save all the documents I was working on and safely shut dowm my computer.
Strengths: battery running time is good.
I like this product and will buy one more. It is very stable and reliable. Among 8 outlets, there are 4 with battery backup. That make it very convenient. And I like its USB connectivity also.
Strengths: It does what a UPS shoud do
Weakness: High-pitch buzzing noise!!!
I bought it because PC Wolrd rates this unit as a "Best Buy", but I am very disapointed with this UPS. My computer is quiet, and I have paid a premium for nice sound card and PC speaker with high signal-to-noise ratio, but this UPS screw all things up with its coninous high-pitch buzzing noise. I will never recommend this product and I will be careful with the product rewiew and rating by PC...
Strengths: Easy setup, High Speed Internet Protection (Tel line, Coaxial Cable, or Ethernet), Great Value
Weakness: Slight buzzing sound when operational
This is my first purchase of a UPS for my home computer system. So far this unit has performed well. Using portable heaters in the house I accidently tripped the circuit breaker and power was supplied to my computer equipment w/o a hitch. All the equipment remained powered while I reset the circuit breaker. Only problem that I see that might annoy some people is a very slight buzzing sound when...
Strengths: Works as promised. Broadbrand surge protection.
Weakness: Makes high-pitched buzzing noise
I've always been a fan of APC UPS's. However, this one has an annoying trait - it makes a constant, high-pitched buzzing/humming noise. According to APC this is "coil buzz" which is "characteristic of this unit" - if that is true, I'd stay away from this particular UPS. The whining is simply too annoying to bear, if you are in the same room as the UPS. Other than that problem, I have no issues...
Strengths: Easy setup, reasonable price
Weakness: None I have found
I purchased 2 of these units based on a favorable review from PC World magazine. Based on it's features and low price, the article said it was a best buy, and I agree. It was easy to hook up all the plugs and cables between the computer (and any peripherals) and the UPS unit. There are 4 plugs dedicated to battery backup, as well as 4 offering surge protection. They are located on top of the unit...
Strengths: Added surge protection on RJ45, RJ11 or cable line, however method you decide to connect to the internet, which other surge protectors do not have.
I bought a few of these units for business computers. Main reason for choosing these was the ability to provide surge protection on the network lines, besides the battery backup and electrical surge protection on outlets. Tested out the units by unplugging the UPS. It provide adequate time and warning for the user to save and close programs. Windows XP Pro hibernation works great with it also....
Strengths: Easy to setup and install. Good value.
Weakness: No information on how to start up the computer automatically after a power failure.
I bought this based on a good review in PC World. I just installed it, so my comments are based on installation rather than experiencing true power failures. The installation and setup is very clear. However, I couldn't find any information on how to get the computer to auto restart after it has been shut down to a hibernate. The software determines how long the battery backup will last based on...
Strengths: Excellent features and useful software.
Weakness: None.
I bought two of these units 2 years ago and they're still working like champs. There is a warning in the readme file about using the PowerChute Personal Edition application and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition client; after speaking with an APC tech support guy he assured me I could run both apps without issue. He did suggest that the APC software be installed first. I'm running both right...

APC (American Power Conversion) Back-UPS ES 725...
Strengths: Protects components from electrical surges and/or blackouts.
Weakness: Battery tough to connect.
Have not had any serious power issues to really test the unit, but having the protection is great peace-of-mind, especially when working long nights on those complex projects. I have not heard the sound issues that others are reporting, except when I'm right beside the unit, it does elicit an almost imperceptible whine, similar to the type of high-pitched sound you sometimes hear from older TVs....
